CONCENTRATED TRAFFIC FLOWS

GECONCENTREERDE AFWIKKELING VAN WEGVERKEER

Widening of the freeway infrastructure, especially near river crossings, can meet objections from the point of view of cost and environment. Alternative solutions, to take away existing traffic bottle-necks with their commercial and social loads, could be found by increasing vehicle densities, at a certain speed, in such a way that stability and safety are not affected: (1) influencing the driver's behaviour by means of signalling (for instance advisory speed or ramp metering); (2) improvement of vehicle attributes (for instance improved braking down power or "soft bumpers"); (3) improvement of infrastructural attributes (for instance introduction of moving belts or cable conveyers); (4) "invisible" automatic driving of vehicles (for instance braking down at emergency or centrally coordinated locomotion). The consequences of these solutions for drivers, environment and society are very different and, in many respects, need further investigation. They have to be judged in the perspective of different possible advantages, especially in the field of freeway capacity, journey times and traffic safety.
