REGIONAL ROAD SAFETY POLICY

REGIONAAL VERKEERSVEILIGHEIDSBELEID

More and more demands are continually being made on politicians by society, these days, not only as to what they do but also why they take a certain course of action. It is no easy matter for politicians to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of one policy against another: because of this civil servants and advisers, among others, have to be constantly aware that they must point out, with ever increasing clarity, the consequences of and alternatives for the measures to be adopted. This approach is also valid in the field of road safety, particularly when this is aimed at reducing the number of accidents and thereby increasing road safety. In this contribution a description is given of the intentions behind the experimental project -regional road safety policy. By choosing an approach aimed at a specific problem, ways and means are developed enabling politicians to be advised in such a way that, with regard to their approach towards road safety policy, they are able to make a choice as to the course of action.
