ASPECTS OF ROCK PRE-SPLITTING
Pre-splitting as a technique in rock excavation was used extensively on the Blackcraigs improvement scheme, A82 trunk road. The severely limiting nature of the river valley in which the road is located and the proximity of a railway line and high voltage overhead electricity line greatly restrained the alignment of the road. A rock cutting of approximately 16 m depth was necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory alignment and therefore pre-splitting was used in order to form stable steep rock slopes and thus minimise land take and avoid disturbance to nearby services. The paper includes several recommendations on site procedure and control based on the Blackcraigs' experience. (Author/TRRL)
