SPEED DISTRIBUTIONS ON ROAD CURVES
The results are given of an investigation of measurements on vehicle speed at preset locations before and within road curves on single- and dual-carriageways. The properties of vehicle speed distributions were studied (for use in the development of driving behavior models). The study also investigated the variation of vehicle speed around single road curves. Vehicle speed distributions for both types of vehicles at the measurement locations were not found to be statistically different from the normal distribution. The pattern of variation in vehicle speeds along a road curve was found to be highly dependent on the level of curvature; this effect being more pronounced for curves of radius less than 250 metres.
