IOWA TESTS AUTOMATED ROAD SURVEY SYSTEM

PASCO's automated method of pavement evaluation, PASCO Road Survey (PRS) system was tested and compared to manual procedures including roadmeters used by the Iowa DOT. The PRS system uses 35-mm photography, artificial lighting and hairline projection, tracking wheels, and lasers to measure ride, cracking, and patching, rut depths, and roughness. The Iowa DOT method provides a present Serviceability Index (PSI) value, while the PRS system gives a Maintenance Control Index (MCI). The details of the system are summarized. The accuracy of the DOT and PRS systems were compared. The results of the study are tabulated and briefly discussed.
