A STUDY ON THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECT OF AIR BAGS (BIOLOGICAL EFFECT OF RAPID AIR PRESSURE RISE, PART 1)
Air bag device is very effective for the protection of occupants in head on collisions of automobiles. This fact is made clear by many experiments which have been conducted hitherto by use of dummies and animals. In this connection, however, the following possible injuries are pointed out: (1) When an air bag is inflated, the air pressure inside of passenger compartment rises rapidly and this pressure rise may cause injuries of occupant's auditory organ and lungs; (2) There is a danger that occupant's eye cornea and face skin may be injured by contacting with the surface of the inflating air bag. In this report, we describe a result of experiments which had been conducted on the subject of the above item. In the experiments, we used 20 rats which were trained before hand under stimulative conditions connected with sound and electric stimuli. We could investigate the injuries of these rats' auditory organs through observing the changes of their behaviors before and after exposure of pressure rise.
