NTSB CONDUCTS TWO-PHASE STUDY OF HEAVY TRUCK ACCIDENTS

A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) field investigation of heavy truck accidents (trucks weighing 10,000 lbs or more with towaway damage) is reported. Approximately 200 cases were investigated and case histories will be published during 1988. The preliminary analysis of these cases suggests that driver and truck deficiencies were cause factors in many of the accidents. The NTSB suggests that employers have a responsibility to ensure that only qualified drivers are behind the wheels; they also have a responsibility to create a work environment and ethic that are conducive to safe practices among drivers. A second phase of the study which began in October 1987 and will end in September 1988 will investigate every accident in 8 states in which the truck driver is fatally injured. The study will provide data on the extent of alcohol and drug use by truck drivers fatally injured in accidents. It will also provide information on the operating environments that may have been contributing factors.
