MUNICH EXTENDS ITS U-BAHN NETWORK
Work has been proceeding since 1965 on Munich's planned U-Bahn network of more than 100 km route length. With 47 km of line and 51 stations already built and operating, the system handles about 700,000 passengers each working day. The work in central Munich is due to be completed in 1988, after which construction activity will be concentrated on the extension lines radiating out to the industrial and residential areas in the suburbs. Three of these extension lines in particular are urgently required. They will aggregate about 17 km route length and 18 stations and will increase system usage by almost 190,000 passenger journeys per day. The authors describe the route network concept, the planning of the three extension lines mentioned, the construction methods to be employed as dictated by economic, routing and geological criteria, and also the experience gained to date.
