VEHICLE VIBRATION
This article considers in detail how various aspects of the vibrating environment can affect people within a transport context. Two models are described to illustrate the effects of arousal/performance, and spare-mental-capacity. The bases of vibration effects are described, and health problems due to vibration are discussed. The performance effects of vibration are considered, i.e. visual performance effects, motor performance effects, as well as effects on reaction time and information processing. The effects of vehicular vibration on comfort are discussed with regard to qualitative and quantitative effects. The motion sickness effects of vibration are also discussed. Note is made of the attempts that have been made to combine all of the information relating vibration to health, performance, and comfort, to compose an accepted standard for human exposure to whole-body vibration.
