ANALYSING THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF CONTINUED SERVICE OR REPLACEMENT OF CLASS ET 471/871 DC-OPERATED URBAN TRANSIT VEHICLES
After placing into service of the Harburg-Neugraben line, the stock of dc-operated vehicles of the Hamburg urban transit authority is exhausted. For this reason, the old Class (BR) 471/871 stock cannot be removed from service as scheduled without providing replacement units. The two alternatives, i.e., rehabilitation of existing vehicles or procurement of new (BR) 472/473 vehicles, are analysed from the point of view of cost-effectiveness. The paper discusses a number of rehabilitation variants for the existing stock, which differ in the scope of passenger comfort offered.
