EFFECTIVE POLICING OF MOTORWAY ROADWORKS

The paper refers to the history of major roadworks on the M1 motorway in Northamptonshire and the policing problem encountered over the years together with the experiences and conclusions drawn. The basic concept of "policing by objectives" is outlined and linked with effective use of manpower in connection with motorway patrolling. Details are given of some experiments carried out by Northamptonshire police during 1984 in an effort to educate the motorist and reduce the high accident rate both within and on the approaches to contraflow roadworks. The paper indicates that the police resources deployed in the vicinity of roadworks can have a marked effect on driver behaviour, but acknowledges that the police need the support and cooperation of other agencies in the task of driver education and accident prevention.
