THE 5 YEAR PROGRAMME FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION AND STRENGTHENING OF THE M1 MOTORWAY IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

The original M1 motorway in Northamptonshire was opened in 1959. The volume and weight of traffic on this section of the M1 has considerably exceeded early expectations and to date, five times the original design load has been carried with minimal structural maintenance. The hard shoulders were of insufficient strength to take traffic, and careful planning and programming has been required to reconstruct/strengthen this very heavily trafficked 20 mile stretch of motorway. The report describes both the old and the new pavement construction, how the traffic has been dealt with for the variety of work carried out, the problems of accidents, and the effect upon the motorway service areas and on the areas surrounding the motorway and its diversion routes. The paper describes how and why recent developments in maintenance works have taken place. For the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 286701. (Author/TRRL)
