LINKING DEATHS WITH VEHICLES AND POPULATION

This paper explores the origins of the Smeed formula which relates the number of road deaths (d), the number of registered vehicles (v) and the population of the country (p). The relationships between d, v and p are investigated for a number of countries over a period of years. The question of correct analytical technique is discussed and the conclusions are that the equation does not apply universally to all countries, that d/v should not be used for international comparisons and that its use to imply increased safety can be fallacious.
