EARTH REINFORCEMENT: DEVELOPER SAVES BY OPTING FOR GEOTEXTILE FLOODWALL

The design and construction is described of a geotextile floodwall (cost $600,000) to protect a shopping center development from periodic flooding. The geotextile reinforced floodwall was recommended because of its flexibility, ease of construction, and cost. The main design emphasis was to satisfy both the internal stability requirement within the reinforced mass and to resist the flood waters. The spacing of the geosynthetic layers of the embedment length are functions of the geotextile strength and soil/geosynthetic friction, respectively. Mirafi 600X, a woven polypropylene geotextile, was selected. Areas of construction cost savings are noted. The face of the wall adjacent to the plaza was constructed with both aesthetics and durability in mind.
