CAN GEOTEXTILES REDUCE COSTS?
This article describes how the appropriate use of the approximately 400 types of geotextiles on both unsurfaced and surfaced roads can reduce pavement life costs. Geotextiles can be used to construct or repair unsurfaced roads. Polymer fabrics improve subgrade stability 50 to 81%. Geotextiles can reduce costs of constructing or repairing paved roads. The material is used to prevent moisture intrusion. Sealing the subgrade can add years to the service life of a paved surface. Badly deteriorated roads were resurfaced with and without geotextiles in 1972. Maintenance work on the non-geotextile road continued until 1982. In contrast, the road using geotextile has required no maintenance work during the past 9 years. Geotextiles can benefit bridges as well. Five box-beam bridges decked with Petromat when they were originally built, averaged 95% effectiveness in preventing leaks.
