SAFETY BELTS - THEIR FITTING AND USE - ENQUIRY 1971-1974

Drivers and passengers of cars were questioned on their use of safety belts during 1971-1974. Data were obtained on the presence and use of safety belts, together with information on the make and year of the car, age, sex, and skill of the driver. Clearance between safety belt and body was measured. From this investigation, the following conclusions were drawn: In October 1974 71% of the passenger cars were equipped with safety belts, and 20% of all drivers of passenger cars were using safety belts. Outside built-up areas safety belts are used almost twice as much as inside these areas. During the test period a shift took place from the diagonal belt (from 31% to 18%), and to a lesser extent from the lap belts (from 40% to 36%) in favour of the three-point safety belt. On the first of June 1975 the use of safety belts will be compulsory in the Netherlands. See also IRRD Abstract No. 55872. /TRRL/
