TRANSPORTATION ISSUES, 1985-1995: A UNIVERSITY PERSPECTIVE

This article examines the state of affairs in the next decade when the U.S. transportation industry will expect the universities to respond to its needs in a manner and time frame inconsistent with the universities' resources. The article examines the reasons for this situation and suggests mutually supportive actions that should be taken to correct the situation. Particular reference is made to conditions in Washington State, conditions which also exist nationwide. Three main issues will dominate during the next decade: personnel needs, educational constraints, and research funding. Each of these areas is discussed in some detail. It is noted that the civil engineering profession and particularly the transportation profession, will face serious personnel and expertise limitations in the coming decade. Universities and agencies need to develop cooperative programs for instructional research, and marketing purposes so that such limitations seriously affect neither the quality of the profession's work nor the economic health of the state of Washington and possibly the nation.
