UNDERSTANDING SHRP: FOCUS ON MAINTENANCE COST-EFFECTIVENESS

A total of $20,000 will be spent on 5 maintenance cost-effectiveness studies that will develop elements of pavement management systems which establish budgets, administer maintenance programs, and allocate resources more efficiently. The studies will also develop equipment, materials, and processes that will increase productivity and reduce service life costs of pavement maintenance. The first of the 5 projects will address the need to understand maintenance treatment effectiveness in terms of pavement condition improvement and extended life. This study will be coordinated with the long-term pavement performance study over five years. The maintenance effectiveness of 6 specific pavement treatments will be studied. The second project, designed to help agencies evaluate pavement maintenance effectiveness, will focus on pavement treatments not studied in the first project. The third project will study the materials, equipment, and procedures used in two prevalent pavement maintenance activities: localized pavement surface repairs, and pavement joint and crack sealing. The fourth project - on work zone systems - will create objective procedures to evaluate both existing and newly developed devices and equipment. The fifth study addresses a fundamental concern of the maintenance community - new and innovative ways to implement research results.
