PROGRAM AVERTS CRACKED EYEBARS

By diagnosing the cause of a severed eyebar on a suspension bridge tiedown, it was possible to take steps to prevent the same trouble from endangering two nearly identical spans over the Allegheny River in Pittsburg. The bridge is self-anchoring. Strain gauge tests on the failed eyebar revealed that it had not been working in the manner originally designed. Horizontal forces had acted on it, but it could not be determined if the cause was live load or temperature differentials. The article briefly describes the correction of the defect, and the preventive maintenance plan it sparked.
