RETROFIT RIDS PLANT OF RAP'S BLUE SMOKE

A drum mix asphalt plant had to be retrofitted to substantially reduce plant emissions and opacity levels in order to be able to produce recycle mixes in Montreal. The original drum mixer configuration was producing blue smoke because during recycled asphalt pavement processing, the system's design allowed extreme heat transfer rates to take place. The problems were solved by retrofitting the plant with a manufactured recycle system, and a few mechanical alterations. The recycle system eliminates burning RAP and blue smoke by separating the combustion and heat transfer processes. The net effect is to control the total heating rate in the front end of the dryer and to make use of the entire dryer length for heat transfer. This allows the mixer to process high ratios of reclaimed asphalt (up to 100% RAP) without producing unacceptable emissions.
