SPREADSHEETS: A NEW DESIGN TOOL

In spreadsheet programming, which is the best example of the iterative design process, the calculations immediately propagate throughout the spreadsheet as new data are entered. This gives engineers a responsive design tool. Two programs are presented here which give a quick overall look at different applications of spreadsheet programs. A steel beam design template is described which combines the database features of spreadsheet programs. A spreadsheet program for designing a biaxially loaded footing which has the convenience of having data and results in the same window is also described. A structural steel program is described which uses the database features of the spreadsheet programs. The limitations of spreadsheet programs are also noted.
