FROM BRASS TO SILVER TO GOLD

This article describes some dramatic changes in transportation since 1961 and contemplates the kind of developments that might occur between now and the 21st century. The article deals primarily with intercity transport. The situation from 1961 to 1986 is reviewed with particular reference to railroads, airlines, pipelines, domestic water transport, bus lines, mass transit, and motor carriers. The situation in 1986 and beyond is discussed with reference to the same areas. The changes that have happened grew out of deregulation and the improper location of industry. The latter was the result of noncompetitive rates. Freight rates are like protective tariffs. The new contracts could embody major shifts in plants and distribution centers. Worldwide changes may preclude relocation within the United States. The world is becoming a global economy and the routes of movement will be greatly altered.
