HOUSE, SENATE APPROVE SINGLE DRIVER'S LICENSE; BILLS GO TO CONFERENCE
Both the House and Senate have approved different versions of trucking safety legislation that would require, for the first time, a single, standard commercial driver's license for all truck drivers. The House measure (H.R. 5568) would set a 0.10 percent blood limit on blood alcohol content for truck drivers. Both this and a Senate bill would require minimum federal standards of driver testing, with the Department of Transportation charged with compiling those standards. Uniform testing and licensing would prevail for all commercial motor vehicle operators, who would be prohibited from having more than one commercial driver's license at any one time. The Department of Transportation earlier expressed opposition to the legislation, preferring instead to approach the subject administratively.
