ROAD SALT AND CORROSION IN VEHICLES
VAEGSALT OCH BILKORROSION. SAMMANFATTANDE VAERDERING AV UNDERSOEKNINGAR UTFOERDA VINTERSAESONGERNA 79/80, 80/81 OCH 81/82
A series of studies was made over three winters on two test sections which were not salted and two control sections which were salted in the normal way. Test specimens of ordinary car steel were mounted underneath a trailer drawn along the roads 4 days a week. The specimens were (1) treated with an ordinary anti-corrosion agent used on cars, (2) works lacquered, (3) untreated. During the first winter all sections were salted, during the next two only the control sections. During the last winter the effect of reduced salting was also studied. Atmospheric corrosion was studied by exposing test panels along each section. Results: depending on weather, corrosion conditions may vary considerably between winters. Atmospheric corrosion does not vary to the same degree, and no relationship has been established between mobile and stationary exposure. During a normal winter, road salt doubled the rate of corrosion of untreated steel. During a colder winter, the rate of corrosion is markedly reduced on both salted and unsalted roads, but the effect of salt at the same time increases. Salt causes faster degradation of anti-corrosion agent and repair varnish, while works lacquer is only slightly affected. Reduced salting had some effect on untreated steel, but none on treated steel. (TRRL)
