ACCIDENTS INVOLVING MOTORCYCLES: BIBLIOGRAPHIC REVIEW

ACCIDENTS IMPLIQUANT DES MOTORCYCLETTES: REVUE BIBLIOGRAPHIQUE

This is a bibliographic review of studies, carried out in France and in other countries, of accidents involving motorcycles. The studies included can be grouped into two categories: studies based on police reports listing accident factors related to the driver, vehicle, environment, infrastructure and accidentology studies concerned with the nature, cause and consequences of injuries sustained. The existence of an "extra-risk" for motorcyclists was observed. Although it is difficult to determine the real accident factors, the results obtained highlighted two main factors: control of speed and vehicle experience. In many cases the motorcyclist travels at a speed superior to that of other users, and this "mix" of speeds is an important risk factor. On the other hand, motorcycle dynamics make the handling of these machines more difficult and adaptation from one machine to another more arduous. This explains the large number of accidents where the motorcyclist alone is involved. (TRRL)
