WORKING WITH THE ENVIRONMENT

The highway designer is often faced with problems and restrictions when employing his trained skills in the design of a highway. However, when the project is situated in an urban environment and encompassed by a conservation area these difficulties are exacerbated and a whole range of additional skills are required to solve them. This paper discusses the aspects of the winding road improvement scheme, and details the requirements of working within the Halifax conservation area. It refers to the initial discussions with all the interested bodies and the resulting amendments to the proposals, the problems faced by the contractor in programming the works, and shows that, with the co-operation of all parties concerned, the outcome can be recognised as a success, not only by industry as a whole, but also by the public.
