METRO WILL DOUBLE IN SIZE BY 2000

Discussed herein is the Budapest Transport Authority's plans to expand and improve its present metro lines inorder to have a network of metro, light rail and suburban railways that will be woven together to form a coordinated grid of public transport in Budapest. In terms of length, the current metro represents a mere 2 percent of the public transport network, (a dense pattern of tram, bus and trolleybus services and four suburban lines (HEV) comprise the rest), but carries 25 percent of the weekday traffic. This percentage is expected to double with expansion. Extension of the already operational Line 3, engineering design of a fourth line, proposed construction of a fifth line, trials which are underway on six prototypes of a new design of metro car requiring a single operator as opposed to those currently in use requiring two operators per train as well as future plans to set up a new semi-circular light rail route round the east side of the city are also discussed.
