MAKING BUS MAINTENANCE FLOW SMOOTHLY

The Metropolitan Transit Corporation's (MTC) new 300,000-square-foot bus garage is one of the largest of its kind in Minneapolis. It houses 300 buses and has service bays for as many as 35 more buses. The four main bay areas consist of a fueling and washing area, a central maintenance bay where most of the maintenance is done, a lube bay and a parking bay. The maintenance bay spans 120 feet and is covered by a 43-foot high gabled roof. The use of a bulk storage and custom circulation system was chosen over one using drums of fluids because of the size of the facility and safety and efficiency requirements. These two systems would allow MTC to recoup added equipment costs in a shorter period and be less labor-intensive. The six air-powered pumps selected for the facility will provide constant high volume supply with minimum surge and maximum air economy at high speed. More than 180 hose reels were installed so that the men could be more efficient at their work stations by having the necessary fluid near the appropriate work station. The height of the roof caused a temperature variance problem. To solve this problem ceiling fans and lubricant pumps with thermal relief valves to relieve static pressure which can cause the system to malfunction were installed.
