SAN JOSE SHOWS THE WAY

The 20-mile system being built by the Santa Clara County Transportation Agency will run from South San Jose to Old Ironsides in the north, through the heart of what is known as Silicon Valley. Eighty percent of the funding for the system is being provided by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration, with the remainder coming from state and local funds, including a half-cent portion of the county sale tax. The $372 million project, the biggest light rail transit project in the country in half a century, is one of three major construction jobs in Santa Clara County. The overall project includes a 9-mile freeway being built in San Jose which will accommodate the light rail system in the center, on its own exclusive right-of-way while the rest of the system will run on tracks on city streets, powered by overhead wires and a 10-block transit mall in downtown San Jose. The articulated LRVs for the system being supplied by the Urban Transportation Development Corp. (UTDC) in Canada, rail/bus integration plans, a fare structure study and the light rail maintenance facility are also covered.
