SITING AND LAYOUT OF BUS TERMINALS. INTERIM REPORT: ANALYSIS OF ROAD ACCIDENTS 1981-83

LOKALISERING OCH UTFORMNING AV BUSSTERMINALER. DELRAPPORT: ANALYS AV TRAFIKOLYCKOR 1981-83

There has been a steep increase in public transport, chiefly bus traffic, during the eighties. Many existing bus terminals and larger stops are unsatisfactory regarding effectiveness, convenience, safety and flexibility. Shortcomings relate to both siting and layout. The object of this project was to appraise accident hazards at bus terminals and to supply data for the assessment of the effect of investments in public transport. Previous studies indicate that there are relatively very few accidents involving public transport, particularly in built-up areas. On the other hand, walking to and from stops entails greater risks. Municipalities all over Sweden were requested to supply information on all terminals and large stops, regarding siting, type of installation, type of traffic, accidents and injuries to persons, traffic volumes in terms of buses and passengers, sketches showing layout etc. Unfortunately, information has not been supplied by all. Terminals and stops have been grouped into size classes according to numbers of boarding and alighting passengers. The mean values of accident rates (accidents/million arriving buses) and injury rates (injuries/million alighting and boarding passengers) have been calculated. On average, accident rate for terminals and large stops is about 5, and the injury rate about 0.085. (TRRL)
