SPIRIT LAKE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN
Washington State Department of Transportation will administer the construction of a 25-mile strip of new highway in a remote area. This new highway, which will be the only all-weather westerly access to the Mt. St. Helens, will consist of one 12-foot wide lane in each direction, with four-foot shoulders on each side. Grades will be maximum of seven percent, and speed limits will be 50 mph cut to 40 on the section closest to the mountain. Road design and construction measures will keep environmental impacts at a minimum. The site will be monitored for archaeological or historic resources. There will be 10 bridges along the new highway.
