UNDERSTANDING SHRP: FOCUS ON SNOW AND ICE CONTROL

The objectives of the Strategic Highway Research Program's snow and ice control studies are as follows: provide more cost-effective ways to prevent or remove the buildup of snow and ice on highways and bridges during winter conditions; reduce the deterioration of bridges, pavement, and vehicles; and mitigate adverse environmental consequences of the use of snow and ice control chemicals. Five projects totalling $8 million have been identified in support of these objectives: research on ice-pavement bond prevention; research on ice-pavement bond destruction; development of improved displacement plows; improved methods for controlling blowing snow; and management of snow and ice control operations. When the projects are completed, field tests will be conducted and integrated demonstrations will be held.
