SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF MOTORCYCLISTS
Motorcycle riders can be broadly divided into (a) riders who use a motorcycle for practical reasons; (b) rider enthusiasts; (c) irresponsible riders. Practical riders are goal oriented in the sense that they ride the smaller bikes mainly for short journeys to and from work. They perceive riding to be anxiety provoking and are often serious minded and over-cautious in their approach to riding. They resemble those who are described by Apter and Smith (1975) as being "telic dominant". Rider enthusiasts enjoy riding for its own sake. They perceive riding to be exhilarating and engage in a level of risk which is perceived by them to be "acceptable". They resemble the "paratelic dominant". Irresponsible riders have characteristics similar to those who are "negativistic dominant"; they tend to take what is perceived by others as high levels of risk. The different attitudes held by riders and their different perceptions of risk taking have implications not only for the effectiveness of training but also for the kinds of safety measures for reducing motorcycle accidents.
