MOTORWAYS AND URBAN NETWORKS

This article deals with hybrid networks, i.e. those cases where traffic streams will use both urban networks and motorways, and where a disruption of one of the two will affect traffic on both. The author outlines research discussed at the meeting: "Traffic and Transportation, An Advanced Course on Optimisation for Traffic Engineering and Control" held on the Isle of Capri, October 18-25th, 1984. He concludes that: motorways and urban networks each have their own specific traffic characteristics. They have their own off-line study tools to design proper control schemes. Control equipment will to a great extent be specific for each. In hybrid networks under oversaturation conditions (also the temporary ones caused by accidents, roadworks, etc) interaction between the two control systems is needed. The example of a network in the city of Amsterdam is quoted. (TRRL)
