A METHOD FOR IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

A method, derived from the theory of internal models in the control of traffic behaviour, was applied to case studies of serious accidents. The traffic accident investigation team in the area of Turku, Finland, used the method for analyses of thirteen accidents, which took place in 1981, and in which nineteen drivers were involved. The cases were described in detail, but the data were also statistically treated in order to demonstrate the usefulness of the method. The study revealed three evaluative aspects concerning the method: (1) the theory helps in finding the essential features in the course of traffic events leading to accidents, (2) the interaction between people and environment can be adequately described and (3) the empirical findings can be explained consistently. Also, the application of the theoretical framework to the statistical treatment of the data was considered to be useful. (TRRL)
