Minor, local safety measures are gaining more and more importance in traffic safety work, because new, extensive national measures are getting harder to find. This study presents an example of how to perform a detailed safety diagnosis and traffic environment analysis in a small town, suburb or urban community. The study area was the Espoonlahti suburb in the city of Espoo. During the study period this area had about 12000 inhabitants. The research material consisted of police-reported traffic accidents in 1979-1983, traffic volumes, data gathered in a survey on school children and observations made during visits to the study area.
