TIMETABLE ESTABLILSHED FOR CHANNEL TUNNEL
The tunnel under rhe channel between England and France should be open to traffic in the spring of 1993. The project consists of two single-track tunnels of 7.3 meter diameter with a 4.5 meter service tunnel between them. The tunnel will be about 50 kilometers long between the British and French terminals. In the tunnel, a roll-on/roll-off rail shuttle will be operated for cars, buses, trailers and commercial vehicles. The tunnel, which will be bored almost entirely through chalk marl, an impervious rock partucularly suitable for tunneling, will be lined with concrete or cast iron. In the channel section, the tunnel will be about 100 meters below sea level and 40 meters below the sea bed. There will be two crossovers between the main tunnels at intervals to allow trains to change tunnels, thus permitting routine maintenance without disrupting tunnel operations. Plans for a road network to link the tunnel to France's national motorway system have been announced. There will also be significant improvement to Britain's road network.
