ERODIBILITY OF SUBBASES AND THE BEHAVIOR OF PAVEMENTS
ERODABILITE DES FONDATIONS ET COMPORTEMENT DES CHAUSSEES
Observations made on a representative sample of French concrete pavements have confirmed the importance of the role of the resistance to erodibility of the materials and the subbase. Core sampling constitutes in itself an initial test of erodibility which, in the great majority of cases, is closely correlated with the coefficient of deterioration of the pavement. Rotary brushing and vibrating table tests make it possible to further refine the assessment of resistance to erodibility. Among the interesting results they have revealed, two (obtained on a well graded aggregate and slag mixture) show that this material has a resistance to erodibility at least as good as that of cement bound granular aggregates in common use. These tests and observations made it possible to dimension a three-dimensional graph showing the potential relationships between traffic, erodibility and weather severity. (Edited author abstract)
