GEOTEXTILE MARKET GROWTH BELOW EXPECTATION
The geotextile market grew at an 11 percent rate during 1985 and is expected to grow by 12 percent during 1986. It is felt by some that continuing low geotextile profitabililty has led to a reduction in new business development activity. This article discusses woven and nonwoven geotextiles as well as the growing family of geosynthetics that include geogrids, drainage nets, geomatrixes, and specialty erosion control products. Geotextiles are receiving widening acceptance, understanding and usage in the civil engineering community. The development of standards and specifications will soon be completed. The need is noted for acceptable profitability levels that can fund broader new market development activities by manufacturers.
