SOME NEW CONCEPTS IN TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION
NEKE KONCEPCIJE SAVREMENOG GRADJENJA TUNELA
The paper discusses the main concepts of tunnel construction based on the results of research studies performed in the field of rock mechanics both in the world and in Yugoslavia. The principles of development of the modern concepts of tunnel construction are discussed. The importance is stressed of an analysis of the engineering, geological and geotechnical conditions of the mountain rock mass where the tunnel is to be constructed. Special attention has been paid to the NATM concept as the main representative of modern tendencies in tunnel construction. The paper describes some experiences and trends in the study of the phenomena connected with mountain rock mass stability and the construction of tunnel timbering and lining. The importance of previous laboratory and in situ tests is stressed as well as the importance of the measurements of the magnitude and rate of tunnel deformation. Some aspects of relations between techniques and construction technology, work in progress, and tunnel timbering and lining are particularly discussed. (TRRL)
