ANNUAL REPORT: APPLICATION OF ADVANCED LASER DIAGNOSTICS TO COMBUSTION STUDIES IN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES
Laser-based diagnostic techniques are being developed to provide detailed time- and space-resolved measurements of engine combustion temperatures, species concentrations, velocities, and turbulence levels. The work performed to date toward the development and application of laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), Rayleigh scattering, and other measurement techniques to engine combustion processes is summarized. It is concluded that most problems with application of LDV and LRS to homogeneous charge engines have been overcome; that demonstration of these techniques in injected engines will be accomplished during the next year; and that several other techniques, such as differential laser refraction, Rayleigh scattering, coherent and stimulated anti-Stokes Raman scattering offer promise as useful diagnostic techniques.
