THRESHOLDS AND SPATIAL ANALYSIS MODELS. CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKING PAPER
This paper introduces the concept of thresholds of satisfaction and shows how they have been used and estimated in the field of spatial analysis. It then presents a land use model based on the concept. The model provides the basis for investigating the impact of changes in transport technology on urban growth. A review of research, into the existence of thresholds, indicates that in many situations the incorporation of thresholds results in an improvement in model performance and hence understanding of the choice process. The application of a threshold model, of location choice, to particular urban issues indicates that the ever increasing vehicle speed resulting from the introduction of new transport technologies tends to increase segregation and dispersion of the urban population.
