SIMULATION OF TWO-WAY OPERATION OF TRANSIT ROUTES USING THE TRAMS PACKAGE. CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKING PAPER

This report describes the research project aimed at increasing simulation capabilities of the Trams package by modifying the model to allow the simulation of two-way operation. The simulation of two-way operation is achieved without affecting the installed characteristics of the previous version of the package. The previous version of the model allowed for the simulation of a network by adopting a route model on all route segments forming the network in a sequential manner. The new version allows for simultaneous simulation of all route segments forming the network. Moreover, the new model extends the use of route segment concept to facilitate the simulation of two-way operation by considering the opposing flow directions as two route segments sharing common route characteristics. Animation capabilities of the model were upgraded to match the current simulation model. The animation model is extensively used for validation of the latest developments of the model. Two examples of the model application are briefly mentioned in this report. The effects of introducing checkpoints to regulate the flow of transit vehicles is examined in the first simulation application. Secondly, the effect of changing vehicle size, as in the case of introduction of articulated vehicles is investigated using the simulation model. These applications are already submitted for publication elsewhere. (Author/TRRL)
