IN-HOUSE GRAPHICS CUT COSTS FOR COTA

Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) of Columbus, Ohio, has undertaken in-house production of clear, concise and attractive graphic displays for the convenience of its ridership. COTA uses an automated signmaking system to produce logos and type for its 343 buses and 4,000 bus-stop signs. The computerized system cuts prespaced, aligned lines of type on self-adhesive vinyl. To create such type, the operator types the message and then selects a size and style for the message. Cost savings have been substantial. COTA logos did cost $7.50 each when produced outside; the signmaking system produces them for $1. COTA not only produces graphics for buses and signs, but is also using its automated system for timetable maps, designation signs, sandblast stencils, masking for painting, and direct-adhering screenprint stencils.
