KARLSRUHE'S TRAM/S-BAHN INTERCONNECTION
Karlsruhe, West Germany, is planning to extend its streetcar service over local lines of the German Federal Railway (DB) where the cars will share trackage with regular DB trains. This service would eliminate intermodal transfers in the course of travel between suburbs and the city center. Four factors are to determine feasibility: Construction problems, operating complications, costs and vehicle technology. There will be problems of allocating revenues in the joint operation; presently DB suburban trains and streetcars are coordinated but each collects its own fare.
