UNDERSTANDING SHRP: FOCUS ON ASPHALT PROPERTIES

The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), the $150 million program which is intended to achieve major breakthroughs in highway technology, materials and processes, will focus on 6 areas: asphalt properties; long-term pavement performance; maintenance effectiveness; bridge component protection; cement and concrete; and snow and ice removal. $30 million a year of federal aid construction funds will be earmarked for SHRP. The proposed asphalt studies aim to improve pavement performance through increased understanding of the chemical and physical properties of asphalt cements and asphalt concretes. The asphalt program work will be done in 5 major research projects costing $50 million in 5 years. The first project will address the fundamentals of chemical and physical properties, their interrelationships, and the interaction between asphalt and aggregate. This article lists the specific projects to be completed. Asphalt pavement performance prediction models will be developed. The asphalt program will culminate in the preparation of performance based specifications for asphalt, and recommendations for an asphalt-aggregate mixture analysis system using modified or unmodified asphalts.
