AN ANALYSIS OF DRIVER, VEHICLE AND HIGHWAY CHARACTERISTICS IN CAR/TRACTOR-TRAILER COLLISIONS AT INTERCHANGE AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION/MAINTENANCE LOCATIONS
The findings are discussed of a study of car/tractor-trailer collisions which occur at highway interchange locations and road construction/maintenance areas. The study was based on data collected by Maryland State Police during the 2-year period from 1983-1984 as part of the Maryland Automated Accident Reporting System (MAARS) program. The study found that the largest potential growth in highway safety for cars and trucks lies in increased driver awareness, qualifications, and etiquette. The study included a detailed analysis of nearly 900 accidents. It was demonstrated that driving performance by truck drivers contributed more significantly to accidents than vehicle or highway environment failures. Excessive truck driver speeds and car driver failure to yield right-of-way were the most frequently cited performance failures resulting in the accidents studied.
