A REAPPRAISAL OF MOTOR VEHICLE NOISE CONTROLS IN AUSTRALIA
Traffic noise has been identified as the major noise problem in developed countries. Many scientific studies carried out over the years have demonstrated the deleterious effects of noise on people. Despite the introduction of a number of control measures, traffic noise remains a major environmental problem in Australia. At present, a significant proportion of the Australian population is impacted by excessive traffic noise. Projections indicate that the situation will worsen unless more stringent control measures are adopted. Traffic noise should be abated through the simultaneous application of all practicable control techniques. However, control at source must continue to be the main strategy. Vehicle noise controls are needed to reduce bulk traffic noise and also to reduce the disruptive effects of individual noisy vehicles standing out from other traffic. Proven technology exists to substantially reduce vehicle noise at only low or moderate cost. Many overseas vehicle noise limits are more stringent than current Australian standards. This study identifies effective control strategies which can be applied to various vehicle categories in the short, medium and long term. (TRRL)
