REVIEW OF ROAD VEHICLE LIMITS FOR VEHICLES USING AUSTRALIAN ROADS

A review of road vehicle limits was carried out in 1984-85 to improve uniformity of limits and to increase productivity within manageable road cost increases and acceptable safety and environmental impacts. Economic analysis was based on vehicle surveys, operating cost data and a model of the rural and urban arterial road system for each state. Community views were also taken into account. Economic analyses were carried out for four alternative mass limit options under both constrained and un-constrained budget conditions. Gross mass options of 41, 42 and 42.5t were all considered viable, with benefit/cost ratios between 7 and 11, but the highest net present value attached to the 41T option. Detailed mass and dimension limits were proposed and a number of recommendations related to safety, operational and research matters were made. The summary and recommendations are available in a separate 16 page publication, isbn 0-85588-185-2.
