CONTROL OF SPEED BY ILLUSION AT FOUNTAINS CIRCLE, PRETORIA. TECHNICAL REPORT
A road marking developed in the United Kingdom for the control of speed by illusion (COSBI) employs a transverse bar pattern that affects drivers' judgement of speed, causing them to slow down. The effect of the markings in South Africa was studied on the fast dual-carriageway approach to a traffic circle 140 m in diameter at Fountains Circle, Pretoria. Since installation of the markings in June 1980, consistent 10 per cent speed reductions have been achieved during the day. No reduction in accidents could be detected because accidents do not appear to be speed-related at this particular site. Alternative means of reducing the large numbers of non-injury accidents are suggested. (TRRL)
